What is 3D Laser Scanning?

3D Laser Scanning is a contact-free, non-invasive technology that captures data to create a 3D digital blueprint of a physical object or structure. It is a precise and accurate method of capturing the exact size, shape and characteristics of a physical object.

We use 3D laser scanners to measure the intricacies of a structure to efficiently generate highly accurate representations for architects, project managers and onsite contractors to support the management of a project.

Employing the latest in laser 3D scanning technology enables the team at Fosse Surveying to provide a large amount of structural and site information at the start of every project, helping to establish an accurate level of base data to build upon.

How Does 3D Laser Scanning Work?

3D Laser scanning rapidly collects a large amount of data, recording site information to help us to provide a more efficient and accurate service for our clients.

Working in conjunction with two sensor cameras, the laser is projected onto the surface of your structure, continuously recording and measuring the changes in distance and shape as it moves across. The resulting data is produced in the form of a point cloud survey, which depicts a three-dimensional representation of the structure in its entirety.

Due to the high level of accuracy, utilising millions of points to accurately record the object or structure, 3D laser scanning is perfectly suited to the inspection of a surface and its contours, which requires a large amount of data.

Applications Of 3D Laser Scanning

  • Measured Building Surveys – Floor Plans, Elevations, Sections
  • Point Clouds - Building Information Modeling (BIM)
  • Heritage Surveys
  • Right to Light Surveys
  • As-Built Surveys
  • Floor Deformation and Floor Level Surveys
  • Stock Pile and Quarry Surveys
  • Mines and Tunnel Surveys
  • Roof Plans and Surveys

FAQs

What is the difference between 3D laser scanning and point cloud?

3D laser scanning is the methodology used to capture the data that helps to generate a point cloud survey. A point cloud survey is the digital output of 3D laser scanning.

Is 3D laser scanning LiDAR?

LiDar is the most expensive and accurate form of 3D laser scanning because it utilises specialised software that combines both light and radar to model an object. LiDar requires a highly trained and knowledgeable operator to utilise it to the fullest potential.

What is the cost of a 3D laser survey?

All projects vary from the size of the properties to the extent of what we can include within the model. Please contact us to discuss your project and scope.

The Importance of 3D Laser Scanning

Our 3D laser scanning surveys help to support various members of personnel and can be used as a reference throughout each stage of a project, whether that be a rebuild, renovation or retrofit. A number of key benefits that a 3D laser scanning survey provides include:

  • Minimising the level of risk involved.
  • Eliminate the potential of re-work and reduce costly errors.
  • Reduce the level of hours spent on site.
  • Increasing overall productivity.
  • Potential for early project completion.
  • Another huge benefit is that data can be recorded from the ground, vastly reducing the need to work from height and the safety concerns that come with it.
